Happy 168th birthday to the Cincinnati Fire Department; the first fully paid professional fire department in the United States. 24/7/365 since April 1, 1853. Cheers to another 168 years and cheers to the first professional baseball team in the United States, the Cincinnati Reds!

Local 48 Members:

There will be a press conference tomorrow at 10:00 am to discuss Issue 3 and potential impacts. Any member that is available and would like to show support for our position is asked to arrive at the front steps of City Hall by 9:45.

The Local 48 office will be open by 08:30 if you'd like to grab an Issue 3 shirt or sign before heading over.

NOAA Climate.Gov has issued a Flood Warning for the Ohio River in Cincinnati. 6” of water (sometimes less based on speed) can carry away an adult and as little as 12” of water can sweep away a small car. Be smart, heed the warnings and signs posted by the CPD.

On today’s date, 103 years ago, City Firemen’s Union No. 48 was organized as one of the charter locals of the newly created International Association of Fire Fighters. Happy Anniversary to the men and women of Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 and thank you to all of our brothers and sisters that paved the way for us and future generations!

As we continue to mourn the unexpected passing of our brother, FAO Mike Thompson, we wanted to share with you a message from the Fire Chief of the Cincinnati Fire Department-

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Fire Apparatus Operator Michael Thompson. FAO Thompson joined the Cincinnati Fire Department on February 23, 1997. He promoted to the rank of Fire Apparatus Operator in March of 2011.

During his time with the City, Mike distinguished himself as a man of great faith and character. He was an incredible firefighter who sought additional training opportunities and responsibilities, including becoming certified as an Ohio Paramedic, in the name of public service and a deep love for the communities he served. He touched the lives of many residents of Corryville, Oakley, College Hill, and Pleasant Ridge over the course of his exemplary career. He routinely went above and beyond the call of duty and earned multiple commendations for his actions in the field.

Mike was a beloved member of Cincinnati Fire Department for nearly 24 years. He was also a loving husband and a proud father. Please join me in keeping the Thompson family and the entire Cincinnati Fire Department in your thoughts during this difficult time."

A few months back, a group of Cincinnati Fire Fighters were fortunate enough to pick a private barrel of 1792 Full Proof. The barrel yielded 132 bottles. The bottles are in and engraved with The Thin Red Line, and a portion of the sales will go to support the Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 Burn & Injured fund and The Cincinnati Fire Museum. The bottles have hit the shelves this morning at One Stop Liquors located at 10 Donnermeyer Dr, Bellevue, KY 41073. This would make a great Christmas gift while supporting a good cause. Limit 1 per person.

Today 3 of our brother fire fighters graduated from the CPD academy. These members are promoted Fire Specialists assigned to the Fire Investigation Unit (FIU) in the Cincinnati Fire Department. Congratulations!

YOUR Cincinnati Fire Fighters have been in service to the citizens and visitors of the City of Cincinnati 24/7/365 since April 1, 1853. We have faced many challenges in our over 167 years of existence. Even during these times of uncertainty we remain committed to our oath to respond and ensure that we protect the lives and property for ALL that need assistance. Please keep the men and women of the CFD in your thoughts as they continue to serve our great City. YOUR Cincinnati Fire Fighters are here to help.

Today, while practicing social distancing and best hygiene practices, Local 48 members were busy assembling air sprayers for disinfecting firehouses/apparatus and assembling home decon kits for members that may need assistance while self isolating. All 26 firehouse received a care package with snacks from Perfetti van Melle, an air sprayer, and alcohol hand cleaner for personal use. Thanks to all of our brothers and sisters that stepped up to make this happen! Stay safe.

On April 1, 1853, 444 paid professional fire fighters went into service with the Cincinnati Fire Department replacing over 1200 volunteers. Happy 167th Birthday to the CFD, the United State’s FIRST and oldest fully paid professional fire department!

Our thoughts continue to be with the Springdale PD and the family and friends of fallen PO Kaia Grant. Stay strong; job well done, PO Grant.

The men and women of Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 send our deepest sympathies and condolences to the men and women of the Springdale (OH) Police Department, and the family of SPD Police Officer Kaia Grant. PO Grant was killed in the line of duty during a traffic pursuit last evening. Please keep the SPD and the family and friends of PO Grant in your thoughts. Rest In Peace, Officer Grant; job well done.

With all that is going on in our country, our community, we must never forget to take a moment and remember our fallen brother, Oscar Armstrong III. Brother Armstrong made the ultimate sacrifice 17 years ago while battling a house fire in Bond Hill. May we all learn from this incident and forever keep him and his family in our thoughts. Stay safe.

It’s not every day that we get special visitors at the Local 48 office but today was the exception. (Captain-ret.) Paul Gallagher stopped by the office and Local 48 President Matt Alter and brother Dan Boller had the opportunity to sit and chat with the Capt for a while.

Capt. Gallagher retired with 33 years of service; he entered the CFD in 1953 after working for GE Aviation during the Korean War. Prior to his time at GE he served in the US armed forces during the tail end of World War II. Capt. Gallagher worked at a number of houses in the CFD including the 45’s (now the Cincinnati Fire Museum), the 19’s (Corryville) and finally retiring from the 34’s (Clifton Gaslight). Capt. spoke fondly about his time with the CFD, the ‘good ol days’ and some of the challenges they faced prior to collective bargaining and modern advances in fire fighting.

On behalf of the men and women of Local 48 we thanked him for helping pave the way for current and future generations of CFD/Local 48 members. Never pass up the opportunity to sit and chat with our retired members, you just might learn a thing or two. Stay safe.

In addition to serving our City, hundreds of YOUR Cincinnati Fire Fighters serve or have served in our US armed forces. Today, coordinated by Local 48 brother/Asssitant Chief Steve Breitfelder and the USO, the family of one of our brothers who is currently deployed overseas was able to meet with the members of Engine CoThree, Truck 3, and Santa Claus (before he’d headed out on a little break after his big day)! We support our brothers and sisters at home and abroad and want to make sure that their family, our extended family, is taken care of while their loved ones are defending our freedoms. In solidarity with Blue Star Families, Local 48 will continue to hang the Blue Star banner as long as we have Local 48 brothers and sisters deployed.

To the men and women of our armed forces that are serving our great Nation, both stateside and overseas: We support you and wish you well- come home safe!

Today we said goodbye to our friend, mentor, and brother, Captain Ron Wilson Jr.

Brother Wilson served the City of Cincinnati with passion, conviction, and courage for nearly 25 years. The Wilson family may have lost a husband, father, son, and brother, but they have forever gained the 860 brothers and sisters of IAFF Local 48.

Rest In Peace, Capt., we’ll take it from here.

Thank you to O2X and MSA for sponsoring the “Eat Sweat Thrive” seminar held today at Local 48’s hall. YOUR Cincinnati Fire Fighters attended this workshop to better understand the physical and mental stressors of the job and how they can work to manage these often forgotten aspects. Staying mentally and physically fit allows YOUR fire fighters to thrive personally and serve our community effectively and efficiently. Thank you to these two great companies for their support!

It is with a heavy heart that Local 48 reports the loss of one of our own, Captain Ron Wilson of Engine 34 (Clifton/Gaslight).

Brother Wilson passed away suddenly this morning while off duty. We ask that you keep his family, the men and women of his company, and the CFD in your thoughts. Details about services will be announced as they are finalized.
